Fanthagiro (Bojnice castle)
Fantaghiro or The Cave of the Golden Rose with Alessandra Martines, Mario Adorf and Kim Rossi Stuart, a fairy tale that is well known throughout the world was filmed at the Bojnice castle. The castle featured as the residence of the Black Queen as well as of the mighty Draken in the fantasy story. Apparently, the director of the series Lamberto Bava received a permition to stay at one of the castle's appartments while filming here. The palace is situated in central Slovakia, nestled above the city Prievidza. The Bojnice castle was listed among the TOP 25 most beautiful European castles.
Dragonheart (The Spiš castle, Slovak Paradise National Forest)
Dragonheart's scene where Bowen gets encouragement from the spirit of King Arthur was shot at the Spišský Hrad/Spiš castle. Another location can be found in the Slovak Paradise National Forest where the medieval village set was built near the historic town of Levoča. The clifftop atop which Draco's fiery breath helps Bowen roast the alfresco feast is one of the paradise's most famous landmarks Tomášovský výhľad.
The other filming locations include castles Čachtice, Strečno and National Nature Reserve Dreveník. Popular Slovak mime Miroslav Dasprzyk appeared in the film alongside the famous actors Dennis Quaid and Sean Connery.
Kull the Conqueror (The Devin castle, the Spiš castle, Červený Kameň)
The historical fantasy film Kull the Conqueror (1997) with Kevin Sorbo, who is best known for his leading role in the television series Hercules, was filmed at the castle Devín and Červený Kameň, before moving northeast to High Tatras mountains. The mighty fortress Devín towering above the confluence of the rivers Morava and Danube, is one of the most impressive archeological sights in Slovakia. The territory was populated by Celts in the 1st century BC.
Červený Kameň is a Renaissance mansion 45km northwest of Bratislava in the Little Carpathians. Currently, the mansion is open to public and serves as a museum. At the High Tatra mountains, the exteriors were shot at the Spiš Castle, one of the largest in Europe that was destroyed by fire and wars several times, and rebuilt. Today the ruins accomodate a museum.
The interior scenes were shot at the film studios Koliba in Bratislava.
The Last Legion (The Spiš Castle, Červený Kameň)
The Spiš castle appeared in yet another foreign production. The epic movie from the times of fall of the Roman Empire with Ben Kingsley and Colin Firth. The castle was used for the scenes in Britannia. The producer Martha De Laurentiis said: "The castle was so absolutely perfect and the views from there are incredible—the landscape just goes on for miles and miles, completely unspoiled." Some scenes were staged at the mansion Červený Kameň.
Marco Polo (High Tatras, Slovak Paradise National Forest)
Marco Polo TV series was filmed in Slovakia in 2015. About 500-member crew filmed in the Silesian house at the High Tatras, later they moved to shot scenes in Slovak Paradise National Forest and spectacular Súľovské Skaly/Sulov Rocks in Bytča.
People of 20 nations from around the world such as New Zealand, Australia, Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia filmed the scenes from Mongolia and China in the Sulov Rocks.
Among the main cast of the series were Lorenzo Richelmy, Benedict Wong (also known from Prometheus, Spy game), Tom Wu (from the movie Skyfall) and Zhu Sun (from Cloud Atlas). Directors of the second series were Alik Sakharov and Dan Minahan (also directed the series Game of Thrones, Dexter, The Sopranos, The Newsroom) and Jon Amie.
The Peacemaker (St. Martin Cathedral, Old Town Bratislava)
The magnificent St. Martin Cathedral lent its face to New York's Cathedral in the blockbuster Peacemaker, the first film from Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks Studios starring George Clooney and Nicole Kidman. Hviezdoslavove Námestie/Square with the American Embassy and ornate Slovak National Theatre appeared as the war-damaged Vienna where the climax of the car chase was staged.
Another movie shot in Bratislava dramatizes the story of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and was directed by Jon Avnet. Recreating the Warsaw Ghetto in the streets of Bratislava and boasting an all-star cast,Donald Sutherland, David Schwimmer, Hank Azaria, Jon Voight, Stephen Moyer, Leelee Sobieski, Sadie Frost... According to film critics its one of the best American movies made in Slovak region.
